What Porch is

Porch is a small, text-only neighborhood. We collect only what we need to run rooms, accounts, and moderation.

What we store

  • Account details you choose: username, password (hashed), optional email (encrypted), titles, and status lines.
  • Chat messages in rooms. The terminal only loads recent history per room; older messages are permanently deleted after 365 days.
  • Moderation records when content is reported or flagged, including encrypted report notes and moderator action details.
  • Session and presence data so we know you are here and which room you are in.

Automated safety scanning

To keep neighbors safe, chat messages may be checked automatically before or after they are posted.

  • Some checks run entirely on our servers using keyword rules.
  • When enabled, individual chat messages may be sent to OpenAI's free Moderation API for classification. Only the message text is transmitted — not your whole conversation history.
  • OpenAI's moderation endpoint does not use API data for model training. Per OpenAI's API data policy, moderation requests are not retained for abuse monitoring.
  • Flagged content may be hidden from other neighbors pending moderator review.

Human moderation

Neighbors can report messages. Moderators review reports, may remove content, and may mute or ban accounts that violate community standards. Severe incidents may be preserved internally for safety even when hidden from public view.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your data.
  • We do not run advertising trackers in the terminal.
  • We do not publish your messages to the open web.
